What You Should Know About California's Ignition Interlock Device Pilot Program

California lawmakers announced that Alameda, Tulare, Sacramento, and Los Angeles counties will extend an Ignition Interlock Device (IID) pilot program to July, 2017. Originally set to end on January 1, 2016, the program requires individuals convicted of driving under the influence to install an IID for the following amounts of time:

  • 5 months for a first offense
  • 12 months after their second DUI
  • 24 months after a third DUI conviction
  • 36 months for third and subsequent offenses

What is an Ignition Interlock Device?

IID refers to a breathalyzer mechanism installed in a vehicle to deter individuals from drinking and driving. When a car is equipped with an IID, the driver cannot operate the vehicle until he / she provides a clean breath sample to the mechanism. Additionally, the IID will prompt the driver to provide samples while the vehicle is driven.

Each sample is logged in the device, which will either prohibit the driver from starting the car or signal the driver to stop the vehicle if the breath sample contains alcohol. This information is then sent to the department that ordered the device, such as the court or California DMV.

What to Do If You’re Arrested for Drunk Driving in Dublin

If you’ve been arrested for drunk driving – even if it’s your first offense – a conviction will mean an IID. Facing a DUI is expensive, even without the added expense of an IID. At the Law Office of Ivan O.B. Morse, we can help you avoid a DUI conviction and the legal penalties associated with it. Depending on the circumstances of your arrest, a conviction can mean more than an IID; you could face fines, probation, jail, and a suspended driver’s license.
