Drug Schedules in California

Drug crimes and the penalties involved have a lot to do with the type of drug involved. California categorizes drugs into five different schedules, ranging from most serious and addictive to less serious drugs used for medical purposes. The schedule that the drug involved falls into can determine the seriousness of the offense and the potential penalties. The schedules of drugs in California include:

Schedule I:
Most dangerous drugs that have a higher risk of addiction combined with a lack of medical use for the drug. Examples of these drugs would be LSD, marijuana and heroin.

Schedule II:
These drugs have a high potential for addiction and abuse, but less than drugs in Schedule I. Drugs in this schedule are thought to be dangerous but could have a legitimate medical use, examples are cocaine, oxycodone, methamphetamine and Adderall.

Schedule III:
Drugs in this schedule are thought to have a moderate to low potential for addiction, but more than drugs in Schedule IV would have. These drugs also usually have an accepted medical use. Examples include anabolic steroids, Vicodin and testosterone.

Schedule IV:
These drugs have a low potential for addiction and abuse. They also have very acceptable medical uses in the United States, including Xanax, Ambien and Valium.

Schedule V:
Drugs with the lowest potential for abuse and generally have a legitimate medical use. These drugs usually require a prescription to obtain. Examples of Schedule V drugs include: Codeine, Tylenol, Motofen and Lyrica.
